“ENTER THE ANGEL!”

The purple suited announcer’s voice echoed through the stadium as cheers erupted from the stands. Jason sighed as his angel, Keitaro, climbed down off his shoulder and briskly moved to stand on his open palm. In the raised seat across from him sat his opponent, a young girl with straight black hair and wearing an almost stereotypical Japanese high school uniform. She called out her entry line as she threw her angel into the air. The small robot did a graceful flip as she sailed through the air, landing smoothly on the layer that sat between between the two dues’s.

“You know, when we had heard that some talented dues from Japan was going to be here, I honestly expected one of those girls to show up.”

Jason grinned slightly as he heard the psuedo-telepathic message play through his visors headset. Even when listening through another device Keitaro’s voice maintained its slight echo. It used to be a lot worse, and most people don’t even notice right away that it’s there, but it still persisted after all this time.

“Aye. I would have liked to have seen even just one of them again. It’s been so long now though, I don’t even know if they still play. It’s not like we really ever became friends with them you know.”

Jason smirked as he stood up, careful to discretely cover the microphone pinned to his shirt so that his half of the conversation would remain private. With a sharp twist of his wrist he sent Keitaro flying through the air, the angel twisting about as he went. The angel’s movements mimicking a traditional dance he had seen in Osaka one time.

“DANCE UPON THE WINDS OF VICTORY, KEITARO! THE ANGEL DESCENDS!”

Again cheers erupted from the stands as the local favourite called out his entry line. Keitaro landed with a spin, quickly moving to adapt a combat stance. Jason sat back down as the player chairs adjusted their positions, pulling back from the layer and raising slightly further into the air. Even though it was just a regional tournament, the whole affair was rather flashy and grand. Certainly bigger than Jason would have ever expected when he learnt of ‘Angelic Layer’ years ago, when it had only just started to go international. There wasn’t an empty seat to be seen, and the noise would have been deafening if it wasn’t for the visors being equipped with noise cancellers.

Looking up to the announcer, Jason’s grin threatened to grow even larger. It had been a while since his partner and he could really let loose like this. Even if he couldn’t see everyone again, at least he still had Angelic Layer.

“Let’s win this thing for them. I’m sure your cousin will brag about our victory all over Tokyo if she gets the chance.”
“Aye, Keitaro, let’s show them how we do it Down Under.”

Suddenly three loud beeps sounded, followed by an equally loud siren. Along with the announcers words “ANGEL FIGHT”, this sounded off the start of the match. Jason immediately sat forward, eyes on the layer as it blazed to life, revealing a sparse jungle terrain. As soon as the opponent’s angel so much as twitched, Keitaro was off, charging towards her. This was going to be a day to remember.
I've wanted to do a piece related to an old roleplay forum based on the anime/manga Angelic Layer, called 'Angel Fall', for quite a while now. I couldn't think of what to do for ages but was suddenly hit with a moment of inspiration today as I reminisced on the good times I had on the site. I haven't been on Angel Fall properly since about 2011, and it was officially shut down in 2013 if I'm not mistaken. Kinda miss the site honestly, even if I wasn't a great person to deal with on there.

Some explanations needed:
- Text in Italic is Keitaro communicated with Jason via a form of telepathy. This was a feature unique to Angel Fall that I cannot for the life of me remember how it came to be.
- Keitaro is Jason's angel, who is equipped with an AI chip that allows him to function independently. That is, he can think for himself, as well as speak and move outside of the layer (regular angels are essentially nothing more than dolls when they are not on the layer).
- The chip that makes Keitaro the way he is is called an 'AAMS' chip. I forget what it stands for but it was also a feature unique to Angel Fall.
- Keitaro's 'echoing voice' is a result of some electrical damage to his base circuitry, prior to being equipped with an AAMS chip. It also caused him to have difficulty expressing emotions and left his eyes (originally blue in colour) silver/grey in colour.
